US EPA received a request from NC DENR to perform a Removal Site Evaluation (RSE) at the Chapel Street Battery Dump Site. The Site is located along Psalms Street in Kannapolis, Rowan County, North Carolina. NC DENR performed an assessment of the site (see June 1, 2009 report attached under documents section). There are several residents living along Psalms Street. Psalms Street is a private gravel drive that contains visible battery chips in several locations. The state's analytical indicates lead concentrations present along Psalms Street at concentrations greater than 43,000 ppm. Due to the elevated concentrations of lead present along the gravel residential drive and the potential of inhalation exposure from dust generated by passing vehicles / proximity to homes and the presence of children - EPA approved a removal action at the Chapel Street Site.

EPA clean-up actions began on November 29, 2010.
