On April 1, 2009, an Atwell-Hicks Project Coordinator (PC) conducted a visual assessment of the projected excavation area at 2900 Orleans in Detroit, MI. Prior to the assessment, the Atwell-Hicks PC learned that the owner of the railroad right-of-way had not yet signed the access agreement in order to allow excavation to take place in the railroad right-of-way. As such, the excavation would not take place until the access agreement was obtained.
On April 3, 2009, Atwell-Hicks obtained a signed access agreement from the owner of the railroad right-of-way, thus allowing site excavation to move forward.
On April 7, 2009, EPA granted approval for an extension of the original start date of April 1, 2009 to April 9, 2009.
On April 8, 2009, Atwell-Hicks contacted Miss Dig to verify the location of the utilities that exist in the vicinity of the planned excavation. Miss Dig indicated that the site would be cleared by April 13, 2009, the day on which Atwell-Hicks is planning on beginning the excavation at the site.

Atwell-Hicks will oversee the following activities at the Thornapple Valley site: (1) the removal of visually impacted soil to the east of the building located at 2900 Orleans; (2) the temporary onsite storage or direct-loading of impacted soil for offsite disposal; (3) the collection of cleanup verfication soil samples from the sidewalls and floors of the excavation areas; (4) the collection of GeoProbe samples from depths of 1', 4', 8', 12', and 16' below ground surface in order to determine the extent of vertical and horizontal soil contamination in the vicinity of the vault/tank that exists in the site building; (5) the restoration of all excavated areas to pre-existing conditions; (6) the decontamination of all site equipment; and (7) the completion of a monthly written progress report and its submission to the U.S. EPA beginning 30 calendar days after the approval of the site work plan.

On April 9 and 10, 2009, an Atwell-Hicks sub-contractor will deliver rolloff boxes to the site so that the excavated soil can be temporarily stored prior to disposal.
On April 15, 2009, Atwell-Hicks and its removal contractor will begin excavating PCB-impacted soil from the visually impacted areas of the site.
