Site Description

The Kriger Battery removal site is located in Greenwood, Caddo Parish, Lousisana on commercial/industrial zoned property.  The site is a former battery reclamation facility that operated between 1972 and 1982 and consisted of a processing building, acid neutralization pit, and hammer mill area.  Historical sampling conducted by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ)shows on-site lead concentrations as high as 112,660 mg/kg.  Elevated lead concentrations have been located off-site on adjoining properties and drainage paths.

Current Activities

EPA, along with the START-3 and ERRS team members mobilized to the site on 04/13-14/2009.  During the reporting period, site preparation and initiation of removal action activities were conducted.  The support zone was established adjacent to the site to facilitate the removal action, to include preparation of the foundation for field offices, traffic areas, parking areas, and transition areas; temporary installation of a portable generator and light plant; and identification of equipment and supply storage areas.  The site exclusion zones were established and identified with perimeter fencing.

The START-3 contractor completed a topographic survey of the site, delineation of predetermined removal grids, and general documentation of pre-removal site and off-site conditions during this reporting period.  The ERRS contractor commenced excavation of predetermined off-site excavation grids, completing excavations in 3 grids and accounting for approximately 45 cubic yards of removed soils.  START-3 conducted in-situ analysis of soils during excavations to confirm the 3 excavated grids were below exceedence criteria.

The ERRS contractor also demolished the on-site gray metal building, staging the building material to be containerized and transported to a metals recycling facility.  All excavated soils were stockpiled on site.

Planned Removal Actions

An Availability Session will be held the evening of May 4, 2009 fom 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for all persons interested in Kriger Battery Removal Site activities or having any relative unanswered questions about this removal action.

Location:  Pioneer Community Building
6798 Howell Street, Greenwood,  LA  71033

Next Steps

Upon completion and restoration of the off site grids west of Adams Lane, excavation of lead contaminated in-situ soils will continue east to west.  Excavated soils will be stockpiled and prepared for sampling, profiling, and characterization prior to transportation and disposal.
