Site Description

Five abandoned drums were found leaking in a residential neighborhood in Decatur, GA.  The Decatur Fire-HAZMAT righted the drums, applied absorbent materials to the spilled substances on the driveway, and wrapped the drums under a tarp.  GA EPD contacted EPA to conduct a removal action.

Current Activities

On 31JAN09 ERRS contractor Environmental Restoration (ER) mobilized to the site to overpack the drums and transport them to a safe off-site location.  OSC Jardine conducted continuous air monitoring throughout the overpack and loadout process. No deflections were observed on the monitoring equipment. ER swept up the absorbent materials that were deployed by the Fire Department HAZMAT Team during the previous operating period.  Prior to demobilizing all equipment, ER gathered all of the miscellaneous debris (e.g. tarp, caution tape), conducted a dry decon of all PPE and bagged this minimally affected debris.

OSC Jardine convoyed with ER to their warehouse in Morrow, GA where the drums were staged pending appropriate disposal.  While safely staged at the warehouse, ER collected appropriate confirmation samples for hazard characterization.  On 25FEB09 the drums were collected by a carrier and taken to the PSC recovery facility, an Off-Site Approved facility, located on Medco road in Birmingham, AL.
