Current Activities

ERRS set up the water treatment system to treat water from on-site pits.  The water is pumped through two filter tanks, a 25 micron filter, then an organic clay tank followed by a carbon tank, and finally through a 1 micron filter to remove contaminants.

ERRS pumped and treated water from four of the pits/vaults located on the Site.  A total of 12,050 gallons have been pumped to date.  After removing the water, ERRS removed sludge and debris from the bottom of the pits, and then pressure cleaned the sides and bottoms.  The pits were then backfilled with pieces of concrete removed in order to retrieve contaminated drains and gravel.

A high pressure flushing truck was used to clean the storm sewer along Bluefield Avenue in front of the site.  The storm drain pipes were cleaned from the West Side Alley to the Bluefield Avenue storm drain, and then from the Bluefield Avenue drain to an underground pipe junction that connects to a pipe draining under Bluefield Ave.  The West Side Alley storm drain box using a pressure washer.

START collected wipe samples from the storm drainage pipes in the West Side Alley and Bluefield Avenue storm drains after the Sanitary Board finished cleaning.  The samples were shipped to an EPA-assigned laboratory to be analyzed for aroclors.

ERRS excavated approximately 5 ft. of a drain pipe that extended north from one of the two 6-inch pipes that were excavated from Area 4 last week.  The pipe ended in the footer of a former building.  The excavation was backfilled after removal of the pipe.

EPA, ERRS, and START demobilized from the site on 5/21/09 and will remobilize on 5/26/09 to continue removal operations.
