Preliminary analytical results were received for aroclors in concrete core samples collected from the compressor room floor. The results indicated that the floor was not contaminated at levels requiring further cleanup as part of this action. ERRS backfilled the compressor room with concrete chunks and gravel.
ERRS pumped the remaining water from Vault 116 and treated it in the on-site water treatment system. ERRS removed and washed the scrap metal from Vault 116 and placed it into a roll off box to be shipped off site as scrap metal. The Bluefield Sanitary Board used a flusher/vacuum truck to remove sediment and sludge from the vault. After the sediment/sludge was removed, ERRS degreased and pressure washed the floor and walls. The water generated during the cleaning was removed using the Sanitary Board flusher/vacuum truck and decanted into the Decon Pit. After allowing time for the sediment to settle out, the water was pumped and treated in the on-site water treatment system. ERRS conducted a thorough decon of the Sanitary Board truck and associated equipment afterwards. A total of 176,590 gallons of water have been pumped and treated to date from all site pits, sumps, and basements.
The three transformers that were removed from the power poles in the west alley were shipped off site on June 17, 2009. The transformers were shipped to Environmental Protection Service, located in Wheeling, WV, to be disposed of as PCB waste.
START collected two composite samples of soil excavated while removing the 24" Old Storm Drain pipe. The samples were shipped to an EPA-assigned laboratory to be analyzed for aroclors. The results will be used to determine if the soil is suitable for use as backfill in on-site pits.
ERRS began decontaminating equipment used during the removal. The skid steer was decontaminated and returned to the vendor. One of the excavators was decontaminated and cleaned in preparation to ship it off site.
