Site Description

The Kriger Battery removal site is located in Greenwood, Caddo Parish, Louisiana on commercial/industrial zoned property.  The site is a former battery reclamation facility that operated between 1972 and 1982 and consisted of a processing building, acid neutralization pit, and hammer mill area.  Historical sampling conducted by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ)shows on-site lead concentrations as high as 112,660 mg/kg.  Elevated lead concentrations have been located off-site on adjoining properties and drainage paths.

Current Activities

EPA Removal:
Excavations of EPA designated grids were completed on June 20.  All treatment of excavated soils were completed on site, bringing the total of EPA waste generated to approximately 2,273.41 cubic yards.  All of the approximate 900 cubic yards of EPA treated waste remaining on site is treated, stockpiled, and ready for transportation and disposal.  Construction of a haul road from the pad to the eastern side of the site was initiated to facilitate backfilling operations.

LDEQ Removal:
LDEQ sponsored removal actions were initiated.  This included excavations on the site's eastern portion, accounting for approximately 260 cubic yards of excavated soils.  Excavated soils were staged in an intermediate stockpile in anticipation of transferring to the site's western area adjacent to the pad for treatment.  A waste profile was initiated for LDEQ designated soils by sampling of the respective soils before treatment and after treatment.

Planned Removal Actions

EPA Removal:  Complete second and final round of transportation and disposal of remaining EPA generated waste.

LDEQ Removal:  Continue excavation of LDEQ sponsored grids on the eastern portion of the site.  Stockpile excavated soils prior to treatment, sampling, and transportation and disposal.

Next Steps

EPA removal:  Complete all EPA removal action minus restoration by July 1, 2009.

Key Issues

LDEQ signed the Removal Action Contract on June 11, 2009 to conduct further removal action beyond the EPA scope of work.
