Site Description

The DSC-Trenton Site (aka Detroit Steel Co formerly McLouth Steel) is a former steel production facility located at 1491 West Jefferson Avenue, Trenton, Michigan.

See previous POLREPs for details.

Current Activities

Following receipt of PCB sampling results, which showed the majority of oil to be greater than 50% PCBs, U.S. EPA remobilized to begin draining operations.  During the week of June 22, U.S. EPA drained a total of 32 transformers for a total volume of 8,497 gallons of PCB oil. Oil is being stored in an on site frac tank pending disposal.

Planned Removal Actions

The draining of transformers is expected to be completed before the holiday shut-down next Thursday. U.S. EPA intends to remobilize to the site on July 7, 2009 to begin moving and disposing of the capacitors.

Capacitor must be removed from an elevated mezzanine.  Next Monday ERRS will meet with a crane company to determine logistics.

Next Steps

1) Continue draining transformers,
2) Dispose of transformer oils,
3) Arrange for the removal and disposal of capacitors,
4) Continue to develop a community involvement plan.

Key Issues

The environmental problems outlined in the site’s closure plan are beyond the scope of this removal action.  The On-Scene Coordinator has requested U.S. EPA’s Remedial Section determine whether DSC should be scored for the NPL.
