Current Activities

ERRS and START Contractors have mobilized to Berea Kentucky and the Goodyear Site.

Fund lead removal operations have begun at Site.  Excavation is expected to last three to four weeks with disposal to occur within two months of this date.  Initial conditions on Site are favorable for expedited dig and haul operations, which suggest that the time tables for this removal are expected to improve.  The State of Kentucky’s Department of Environmental Protection (KDEP) has approved the proposed back fill material and has maintained a presence on Site for most of initial project period.

START contractors have completed the following: installed perimeter monitoring using DataRam particulate monitors; and grid locations have been marked for excavation using GPS instrumentation; photo documentation has been collected at Site and all minor roads leading to Site. Initial excavation will begin with grids D2, D5 and I11, J11 confirmatory samples will be taken of all grids excavated.

ERRS contractors have mobilized excavating equipment; gravel has been placed throughout the main road at the Site.

KYDEP has participated in most activities on site to date and is expected to continue their presence on Site throughout the removal

Planned Removal Actions

Initial excavation is planned for grids D2, i11, j11 and g14, the rmaining grids will follow accordingly.  One of the the residential homes on Site may require temporary relocation as a septic system's drainage field may need to be excavated.

Next Steps

Excavation of remaining grids and further identification by KDEP of areas which may contain additional contamination.  Confirmatory sampling of all excavated girds. Clean fill will be stockplied begining the week of June 28th.

Key Issues

KYDEP and EPA will continue to coordinate removal operations to meet both EPA and State environmental limits
