The site is a former radioactive material processing and preparation lab. Closed in 1992. The Texas Department of Health - Bureau of Radiation Control has been working with the PRPs since then to remove sources.
The Site is a conglomerate of buildings. Offices, labs, waste bunkers, warehouses, etc. make up the facility. It is surrounded by medical clinics and hospitals, and retail stores. The closest neighboring building is approximately 4 feet away. Parking for employees and patrons of the clinics are against the walls of the Gulf Nuclear facility.
High levels of radioactivity have been found through out the building. Radioactive sources, radium needles, debris, the building, and even rats and roaches are radioactive.

When requested by the TNRCC, EPA Emergency Response constructed a fence and is arranging for the completion of a monitored alarm system in the building.
The fence completed the enclosure around the entire building. EPA will assume the alarm service, and arrange for repairs.

It is undetermined what planned removal actions will take place at the Site.

The PRPs have contracted for a inventory and assessment of the the Site. EPA, TDH-BRC and TNRCC will work together to determine the proper course of action.
