Current Activities

A summary of the activities performed during the reporting period by the PRP are as follows:
    
• Completed all planned excavation activities (see BMcD map of excavation areas under "documents" on OSC website);

• Transported 6 loads of soil to CID Landfill in Calumet City, IL; all trucks decontaminated prior to leaving site;

Transported 4 loads of soil to Countryside Landfill in Grayslake IL; all trucks decontaminated prior to leaving site;

• Completed backfilling of all areas;

• Completed final grading and restoration of the site;

• The water treatment system was cleaned and demobilized from the site;

• Perimeter real-time air monitoring was discontinued on March 13th, 2009 due to the completion of excavation activities.  Perimeter air sampling (24-hour air samples collected around the perimeter) utilizing PUF cartridges and Summa canisters was discontinued on March 23rd, 2009, with PM10 sampling continuing until the completion of grading activities.
  
• Performed health and safety air monitoring (using hand-held instruments in work zones) during site activities;

• Performed street sweeping activities on Racine Street and Cermak Road;

• Completed de-watering activities in excavation areas;

• Completed water treatment; and

• Discharged 203,800 gallons of treated water to the MWRD sanitary sewer.


START did not collect any split samples with the PRP during this reporting period.

On April 21, 2009, the final site walk through was conducted.  Attendees included the U.S. EPA OSC, representatives from Peoples Gas, START and the PRP contractor Burns & McDonnell.


Planned Removal Actions

Planned removal actions at the 22nd Street Station Site are as follows:

• There are no further planned removal actions at the 22nd Street Station Site, as the removal actions have been completed.


Next Steps

The next steps to be carried out by the PRP are as follows:

•    Submit Final Site Closure Report to the U.S. EPA.
