Site Description

The Kriger Battery removal site is located in Greenwood, Caddo Parish, Louisiana on commercial/industrial zoned property.  The site is a former battery reclamation facility that operated between 1972 and 1982 and consisted of a processing building, acid neutralization pit, and hammer mill area.  Historical sampling conducted by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ)shows on-site lead concentrations as high as 112,660 mg/kg.  Elevated lead concentrations have been located off-site on adjoining properties and drainage paths.  


Current Activities

All removal activities were completed during this reporting period.  ERRS demobilized all equipment and personnel on 06 August 2009, and START demobilized all equipment and personnel on 07 August 2009.  

LDEQ excavations were concluded.  The final phase of LDEQ excavations focused on the area encompassing the cavity of battery waste on the eastern portion of the site, and the area encompassing the former facility building.  All excavated waste from the site’s eastern portion was transferred to the main excavated soils stockpile on the western side of the site.  The former building’s foundation was broken up and incorporated with previously excavated and stockpiled waste.  Soils from underneath the former building’s footprint were then excavated.  These excavations extended to depths of 24-48 inches below the original ground surface.

All LDEQ excavated soils were treated using a specialized chemical application.  Treated soils were stockpiled in anticipation of transportation and disposal off site.

The transportation and disposal of LDEQ treated material was initiated and completed.  A total of 1,914.83 tons (approximately 1,600 cubic yards) of LDEQ generated waste was transported off site.  With EPA generated waste previously shipped off site (2,837.815 tons, approximately 2,340 cubic yards), this brought the total amount of generated waste shipped off site to 4,752.645 tons (approximately 3,940 cubic yards).  Because all waste was treated on site prior to disposal, all waste shipped from the Kriger Battery site was categorized as non-hazardous, low level lead contaminated soil.  Treated waste was sampled at regular intervals to ensure compliance with this disposal standard.  All waste was transported to the Woolworth Road Landfill, operated by Republic Services, located in Keithville, LA.  33 old tires recovered from throughout the site were sent to a local recycling facility.  Rebar from the former building’s foundation was cut into small sections and sent to a local metals recycling facility.

Site restoration activities were initiated and completed during the reporting period.  Backfilling was the primary activity of the restoration operations.  All previously excavated areas of the site were backfilled with a native red clay mix from a local borrow pit source.  This backfill was sampled and certified as clean prior to delivery to the site.  The total volume of backfill was 4,678 cubic yards.  Backfill was graded to drain across the site, and compacted.  A new bed and banks were formed through the middle of the site where the creek which runs through the site had formerly undergone excavation.  All backfilled areas were seeded and covered with hay.  The site’s perimeter exclusion fence was taken down, and a new property frontage barbwire fence was erected along Adams Lane.  All equipment and operations support infrastructure was demobilized.
