The investigatory work at Site B is just about concluded. The principle hazardous material found was lead-acid batteries.
Oil was the other significant contaminant of concern. Some amounts of oil was found in the soil and floating on the ground water inside a pit which was a concrete foundation for a former commercial chicken coop. Oil containers were removed from the pit.
All debris has been excavated from Site B. The debris was then screened to separate soil from the debris. The debris has been sorted to separate anything that may have had hazardous materials or oil products from debris that can be taken to a local Yakima County landfill. The landfill debris has been removed from Site B, batteries are to be sent to a recycling center, and the remaining contaminated debris will be taken to a hazardous waste landfill.
|
|
Work will be suspended for next week as we wait on results of soil samples to return from the laboratory. Operations should resume at Site A the beginning of September.
Work at Site A will involve screening to separate debris from soil and further segregation of hazardous materials for proper disposal.
Monitoring wells will be installed at Site B to ascertain if any oil contamination is leaving the site. Washington State Department of Ecology will provide future oversight.
