Site Description

The DSC-Trenton Site (aka Detroit Steel Company formerly McLouth Steel) is a former steel production facility located at 1491 West Jefferson Avenue, Trenton, Michigan.

See previous POLREPs for details.


Current Activities

From August 17 to August 21, U.S. EPA completed the shipment of the tranformer oil and the rack removal and packaging of the PCB capacitors.

U.S. EPA also continued the site-wide location and consolidation of all hazardous materials/containers.  These materials will be hazcatted so that they can be segregated for eventual lab-packing and disposal.

To date, U.S. EPA has shipped for incineration 1,804 of the 3,744 capacitors to Veolia Environmental Services, 7769 Highway 73, Port Arthur, Texas 77640.

Additionally, U.S. EPA has shipped 22,741 gallons of PCB oil, for incineration, to the Clean Harbors Dear Park facility, 2027 Independence Parkway South, La Porte, Texas 77571 and 17,042 gallons of PCB oil for incineration to Violia Environmental Services, 7769 Highway 73, Port Arthur, Texas 77640.


Next Steps

1) Continue the disposal of the PCB capacitors.
2) Complete the final assessment of the site buildings to locate potentially hazardous materials/containers.
3) Continue to consolidate the hazardous materials/containers in a central location for processing.
4) Complete the hazcat analysis of the hazardous materials/containers.


Key Issues

The environmental problems outlined in the site’s closure plan are beyond the scope of this removal action.  The On-Scene Coordinator has requested U.S. EPA’s Remedial Section determine whether DSC should be scored for the NPL.
