Site Description

Several days of heavy rainfall caused extensive and severe flooding along Peachtree Creek and the Chattahoochie River and led to reports of oils and hazardous materials spills.  EPA On Scene Coordinator Randy Nattis, START and ERRS mobilized to Peachtree Creek to investigate an alleged used oil tank that had been observed.

Current Activities

Reporting period - 0700hr 24SEPT2009 to 0700 28SEPT2009

GEMA was activated in response to widespread flooding in the metro Atlanta area.  ESF10 was not activated.  EPA assisted GA DNR in responding to several reports of released and potentially released materials in local waterways.  EPA coordinated reconnaissance activities with county EMA in the affected areas.  EPA and START surveyed a length of the Chattahoochee River south of Morgan Falls Dam in order to identify and locate containers that had been displaced during the recent flooding (roughly 70 miles).  All located and identified containers were assessed to be empty and remained in place for further activities.

Planned Removal Actions

EPA will continue to coordinate with state and local EMA and potential other trustees to identify responsible parties and owners of located orphaned containers and assist as needed with potential cleanup and removal.
