Current Activities

Activities planned for the week of February 8, 2010 were postponed due to heavy snows in the area.  Personnel mobilized to the site the week of February 15, 2010 for additional excavation activities, backfilling, soil transport and disposal, and restoration of the property.

Preliminary analytical results for the second batch of sidewall samples were received on February 8, 2010.  Results indicated concentrations of PCE greater than site screening levels in both the north and west sidewall samples.  Excavation could not be continued to the north without risking structural damage to the building on the property.  The excavation was extended to the west approximately 16 feet, with a width of approximately 6 feet.  Due to snow melt and recent rain, water filled the excavation at a depth of approximately 3 feet.  A soil sample was collected from a depth of approximately 3 feet below ground surface along the northern edge of the excavation.

A total of 8 truckloads of soil were transported offsite for disposal at King and Queen Landfill in Little Plymouth, Virginia.  Excavated areas were backfilled with existing soil and sand.  Topsoil was unable to be immediately acquired due to the recent snow.  Backfilled areas were graded with the bulldozer and compacted using the excavator.

EPA met with a property owner adjacent to the Jay Cee Cleaners site regarding conditions along the edge of his property due to truck traffic during soil loadout.  Gravel was added to low areas along the roadway between the two properties.  If any topsoil or seeding is necessary, it will be conducted when EPA completes restoration activities on the Jay Cee Cleaners site.

Equipment will be demobilized from the site on February 19, 2010.

Planned Removal Actions

Preliminary analytical results from the most recent sampling of the western sidewall is expected on February 22, 2010.  Results will be compared to site-specific SSLs and used to determine whether additional excavation is needed.

Any additional restoration activities will be completed when weather improves, at a date to be determined.
