1.1.1 Incident Category

Emergency Response.  On April 2, 2010, ADEM contacted phone duty officer Subash Patel.  OSC Karen Buerki was dispatched to conduct an assessment.

1.1.2 Site Description

There were 36 abandoned, leaking drums containing paint waste.  Drums were located in the back of a residential lot.  State data showed high levels of toluene.  ERRS was contacted to consolidate and overpack the drums and addressed stained soils.

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

Drums were abandoned and leaking onto soils.  Soils adjacent to drums were stained.  Several drums contained high levels of toluene.  Drums also contained benzene and xylene.  State data reveal that some drums were flammable. 

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results

USEPA hired WRS to consolidate and overpack the drums.  Drums are staged on site and are now secured.  Drums are awaiting disposal.  Stained soils were also addressed.
