Site Description

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources' (MDNR) Environmental Emergency Response (EER) was notified by the Missouri Highway Patrol on 12/30/03 at 1055 hours that an accident involving a dump truck and a passenger van had occurred at the intersection of Highway 21 and Route Y near DeSoto, MO.  Approximately 25-30 gallons of diesel fuel and motor oil had spilled into a dry roadside ditch and had been contained by a small earthen dam. The spill potentially threatened Ball Branch Creek, a tributary to Fritz Creek, which is a tributary to Joachim Creek which empties into the Mississippi River, approximately 350 yards downgradient.

The Route 66/EER, was mobilized to the scene to provide on-site information, and to offer technical  assistance.

Current Activities

A request was made to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) to apply sand to adsorb the petroleum until proper disposal could be accomplished. Efforts are currently underway to contact the owner to secure the services of an environmental response service to remove the contamination and repair the ditch.

Planned Removal Actions

All removal and disposal actions in regard to the contaminated soils have been completed.

Next Steps

The on-scene coordinator will be processing the site in CANAPS since all relevant information has been obtained.
