Approximately 41,000 cubic yards of mine waste contaminated materials and petroleum contaminated soils were excavated from the vicinity of milling structures, and these materials were transported to and consolidated at the nearby impoundment.  The 43 acre impoundment was reduced in size by approximately 3 acres.  The 3-acre impoundment pond was drained, obliterated, and filled in with clean material.  Several mill structures such as conveyors were demolished to enable excavation of contaminated materials.

A borrow source was developed to provide clean cover material for the protective barrier constructed on the impoundment.  Soil was also excavated from a nearby pasture area to provide additional cover material and to create a substitute wetland for the obliterated impoundment pond.  More than 172,000 cubic yards of course-grained soil seeded with 1875 pounds of a dryland pasture grass mix was placed over the impoundment.  A 1-mile metal T-post and barbed wire fence was erected around the perimeter of the barrier to control access.

Disturbed areas were graded and stabilized for surface water and sediment control.
