Site Description

The Salt Creek Recreation Area County Park is a 196 acre park in Clallam County with upland forests, rocky bluffs, tide pools, campsites and RV sites near Port Angeles. The site overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and surface water from the site drains toward the Strait.

A portion of the park was once a 500 yard military firing range during World War II. Later it was turned into a Sportsman’s 200 yard shooting range, which was finally closed in 1998 when the Park opened.


Current Activities

The Removal Action Memo for EPA to perform the soil excavation was signed by EPA on September 23,2010. EPA and EPA contractors (START and ERRS) mobilized to the site on October 12, 2010.

Between 10/12-14/2010, the access to the affected area was blocked with signs and banner tape to warn people to stay out of the work area;  WDNR felled and bucked trees; the road to the affected area was widened and graveled; ERRS stocked-piled logs for WDNR and grubbed the brush;  START began using the XRF to mark the perimeter of 120 mg/kg lead in soil to define the excavation area.


Planned Removal Actions

Clear brush and trees from road.
Build access road to excavation area.
Mark perimeter of excavation at 120 mg/kg lead using XRF.
Excavate contaminated soil.
Transport contaminated soil off-site for disposal.
Restore affected areas.


Next Steps

A second inner area above 400 mg/kg will be marked to indicate the soil that may need disposal as hazardous waste.

Determine if Cultural Resource Monitor will be needed during excavation.
Determine if SHPO concerns exist.
Segregation of high and low contaminated soils.
