Site operations were shut down on December 23-24 and December 30-31 for the holidays. A limited crew was on site December 27 - 29. During this time, ERRS conducted maintenance on their equipment, snow removal, and performed house-keeping related tasks.
ERRS contractors continue removal of chemical materials from the bottoms of storage tanks. Cleaning of tanks require confined space entries. Approximately 463 drums have been generated and are currently being staged on site. ERRS sampled drums to determine proper disposal methods. ERRS continues to operate and monitor the waste water treatment plant.
START contractors sampled surface water in ten (10) locations for TPH-DRO/GRO, chromium, methanol, oil, and grease analysis during a rain event. Samples were collected from storm sewers and drainage trenches where the runoff from different process areas converges. Samples were also taken from the waste water treatment plant during the event before the outfall. Sample results will be compared to future sampling results to determine effectiveness of surface decontamination. START contractors are performing air monitoring for volatile organic compounds prior to and during tank entry to ensure worker protection.
- Complete removal of chemicals from tanks, piping, and process equipment. - Decontaminate solid surfaces - Remove contaminated surface soil by rail loading areas.
- Continue tank cleaning operations. - Continue to monitor, treat, and discharge waste water from the site into Stoney Creek. - Arrange for disposal of waste drums staged on site.
Disposal activities include disposal from individual tanks, tank consolidations, and a variety of drums. Single manifests may include wastes from multiple sources. Wastes are primarily disposed as corrosive (acids and caustics), flammable (items containing solvents), and non hazardous (primarily oil-based materials).
