1.1.1 Incident Category
EPA Region 4 Telephone Duty Officer was notified of a submerged boat releasing fuel into Lake Lanier. The notification came from Gwinnett Water Resources, who was notified by a property owner adjacent to the submerged craft. Gwinnett Water Resources also contacted the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (GaEPD), who was unable to assist in the response efforts. Duty Officer dispatched responder to assess the situation and determine appropriate response actions.
1.1.2 Site Description
A sunken private boat was reported to be releasing fuel in a small cove on Lake Lanier. The boat was described to be approximately 35 feet long, wooden hulled, cabin cruiser. It is estimated to hold approximately 250 gallons of fuel.

Lakeview Drive, Buford, Ga. A residential neighborhood on Lake Lanier.
1.1.2.2 Description of Threat
Sunken boat releasing fuel to the surface of Lake Lanier. A sunken boat is approximately 35 feet long, wooden hulled cabin cruiser. It is estimated to hold approximately 250 gallons of fuel.
1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results
On April, 29th 2011, OSC Garrard arrived on scene to investigate and speak with the boat owner. The owner was not home. OSC Garrard spoke with the reporting party and was able look at the area in which the boat was sunken from the distance. The boat was completely submerged. No sheen was visible in the cove, but OSC Garrard was not able to investigate at the submerged site to determine if the sunken boat was releasing fuel.
