Current Activities

July 14, 2004:  Radiation training for the site activities for the START, PST, ERRS, EPA Community Relations and EPA Media Relations staff.  Training held at EPA Emergency Response Section Equipment Warehouse, Signal Hill, CA.
July 15, 2004:  Radiation training for START, ERRS and PST personnel
July 16, 2004:  Site orientation for START, PST, ERRS personnel.
July 19, 2004:  Site Mobilization, Personnel:  1 OSC, 1 EPA Media Relations, 1 EPA Community Relations, 3 START, 3 PST, 6 ERRS.  Mobilization included placement of decontamination trailers by ERRS and office setup.  Site office at 5543 Riverton Ave. (south building).
July 20, 2004:  Site Mobilization Continued, Personnel: 1 OSC, 1 EPA Community Relations, 1 ORIA Scientific Advisor, 3 START, 3 PST, 4 ERRS.  Continued site mobilization.  ERRS prepared decontamination reduction zone.  Community/Press Relations trailer delivered and set up.  Community Relations Officer and the START handed out Fact Sheets to the neighborhood.  OSC, ORIA, PST and START met to discuss site issues including gauge segregation, air surveillance and waste characterization.

Next Steps

1.  Initiate enforcement action against the land owner and business owner
2.  Continue community relations program to inform neighborhood of removal activities


Key Issues

1.  Discussions with CADHS on the use of NRC Regulatory Guide 1.86 as cleanup action level.
2.  Approval of Action Memo with statutory exemption from Headquarters.
