-ERRS contractors continued removal of chemical materials from the bottoms of storage tanks. Cleaning of tanks requires permitted confined space entries. ERRS made an effort to deal with all acidic wastes before hot weather arrives. Removals from tanks 663, 171, 675, 663, 172, 220, 221, 223, 229, 228, 227, and 242 were all completed since the last Pollution Report. Waste generated from tank cleaning is being stored on site in drums or consolidated in tanks. 673 drums or approximately 33,650 gallons have been shipped off site for disposal. Additionally, 16,546 gallons of waste water has been removed from T-460 and shipped off site in tanker trucks. More tanker trucks are scheduled to pick up remaining tank contents. There are approximately 15-20 tanks and vessels on site which still need to be addressed including consolidation and waste water tanks.
- Approximately 960 drums (approximately 48,000 gallons) are currently staged on site. Arrangements for further drum disposal are currently being made. Consolidation tanks currently hold approximately 21,000 gallons of material. Disposal of consolidated liquids is being arranged.
- ERRS sampled insulation for asbestos on various tanks which may need to be cut open to gain access. Samples all tested negative for asbestos.
- ERRS continued to operate the waste water treatment plant under procedures approved by the OSC. Storm water is being discharged into Stoney Creek as needed after pH is confirmed by START to be within the limits stated under the facilities previous NPDES permit.
- ERRS rented a pallet-mounted boiler to be used for steaming out process lines throughout the plant. Additionally, the boiler may be used to melt material which has solidified inside of tanks making it easier to remove.
- START contractors are performing air monitoring for hazardous atmospheres prior to and during tank entry to ensure worker protection. START is maintaining an inventory of tank contents and tracking progress of removal.
- START also sampled pipe and tank insulation which has been contaminated with oily material for asbestos containing material to ensure worker protection while it is being decontaminated.
- All site activities are being documented by START.
To date, 1,238,928 gallons of material have been disposed of off site.
|
- Complete removal of chemicals from tanks, piping, and process equipment. - Decontaminate site drainage system and solid surfaces. - Remove contaminated surface soil by rail loading areas. - Dispose of and/ or treat wastes staged on site.
|
- Continue tank cleaning operations. - Clean out drainage system. - Steam out process lines throughout plant. - Continue to monitor, treat, and discharge waste water from the site into Stoney Creek. - Continue to arrange for disposal of wastes staged on site.
|
ERRS has transitioned to a new Response Manager.
|
Disposal activities include disposal from individual tanks, tank consolidations, and a variety of drums. Single manifests may include wastes from multiple sources. Wastes are primarily disposed as corrosive (acids and caustics), flammable (items containing solvents), and non hazardous (primarily oil-based materials).
