Site Description

The Site is located on North Creek, which runs adjacent to 100 Franklin Street in Bristol, Connecticut.  Geographic coordinates of the Site are North 40 degrees 55 minutes 8 seconds latitude by West -57 degrees 0 minutes 11 seconds longitude.

Current Activities

On June 30, 2004, representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CT DEP) mobilized to the Site in response to the report of a sheen and odor observed on North Creek, a tributary of the Pequabuck River.

The sheen/odor was reported by a private resident whose property is located along the south bank of North Creek.  After meeting with the resident, EPA and CTDEP representatives performed a reconnaissance of the area and identified a potential source of the sheen/odor.  According to CTDEP, the sheen appeared to be related to a previous spill incident that occurred in the area in 2002 which involved a leaking storage tank at the Gavelick Machinery Company.  The sheen appeared to be from residual oil remaining after the initial cleanup.

CT DEP took necessary and immediate actions to contain the spill and will act as the lead agency for current and future cleanup activities. The OSC determined that actions taken by CT DEP to mitigate the spill were not inconsistent with OPA/NCP cleanup protocol.

Planned Removal Actions

CT DEP will investigate further and take necessary actions to mitigate the spill.

Next Steps

No further action by EPA.
