2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
On September 19, 2011, Midwest hauled off (2) 20 cyd roll-off box of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
- 0.50” of rain fell over the weekend and 1.7” of rain fell during the day. Per TriHydro, the rain did not overtop the storm sewers or escape the Site, however, water did flow into the east containment.
- Midwest continued solidifying material in the solidification pits with wood pulp.
- Midwest began pressure washing and cleaning the east containment.
- Midwest had (3) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification agent delivered from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest staged (8) 20 cyd roll off boxes near the solidification pits in anticipation of treating sludge from the bunker tanks.
- Midwest continued cleaning caustic tanks 2, 3, and 3a.
On September 20, 2011, Midwest had (5) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification agent delivered from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest continued solidifying material in the solidification pits with wood pulp.
- Midwest hauled out 8 loads (43,900 gal) of oily water from manway SS-23.
- 5 loads (28,200 gal) to United Waste Water Inc.’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
- 3 loads (15,700 gal) to Clean Water Limited’s Cherokee Drive facility in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest continued cleaning caustic tanks 2, 3, and 3a.
- TriHydro treated storm water from manway SS-23 with the GAC system and stored the treated water in frac tanks.
- Midwest personnel entered the Oxidation Pit and collected a sample for waste characterization on September 20, 2011.
On September 21, 2011, Midwest hauled off (10) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
- Midwest continued solidifying material in the solidification pits with wood pulp.
- Midwest hauled off 4 loads (22,200 gal) of oily water from the Site.
- 1 load (6,200 gal) from the Tank 51 containment to United Waste Water Inc.’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
- 1 load (5,000 gal) from the Tank 51 containment and 2 loads (11,000 gal) from the Acid Tank containment to Clean Water Limited’s Cherokee Drive facility in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest had (3) 50,000 pound loads of wood pulp solidification agent delivered from Appleton Papers, Inc. in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest continued cleaning caustic tanks 2, 3, and 3a.
- Midwest mobilized a high-power submersible pump. The pump was placed in the west million gallon bunker tank and used to move sludge into the solidification pits.
- TriHydro treated storm water from manway SS-23 with the GAC system and stored the treated water in frac tanks.
On September 22, 2011, Midwest hauled off (19) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
- Midwest continued solidifying material in the solidification pits with wood pulp.
- Midwest hauled off 11 loads (62,435 gal) of oily water from the primary separator, east containment, acid tank containment, and primary separator pit.
- 8 loads (46,435 gal) to United Waste Water Inc.’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
- 3 loads (16,000 gal) to Clean Water Limited’s Cherokee Drive facility in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest began cleaning Tank 35 (off-spec acid storage tank).
- Midwest began cleaning Tank 4 (virgin acid storage). Due to a hole located in the bottom of Tank 4 with significant rust accumulation inside the tank, Midwest plans to remove as much rust as possible with pressure washing.
- TriHydro treated storm water from manway SS-23 with the GAC system and stored the treated water in frac tanks.
- TyiHydro discharged approximately 7,100 gal of treated storm water to Oil Creek and collected the sample set required by the City of Indianapolis Special Discharge Agreement.
On September 23, 2011, Midwest hauled off (4) 20 cyd roll-off boxes of solidified sludge to Southside Landfill in Indianapolis, IN.
- 0.3” of rain fell overnight. Water pooled above the manholes in the northeast and southwest areas, but stormwater did not breach the Site berms.
- Midwest hauled off 3 loads (17,200 gal) of oily water from manway SS-23 and the primary separator pit.
- 1 load (6,200 gal) to United Waste Water Inc.’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.
- 2 loads (11,000 gal) to Clean Water Limited’s Cherokee Drive facility in Dayton, OH.
- Midwest pumped sludge from the west million gallon bunker tank to the solidification pits with a high-power submersible pump.
- Midwest solidified sludge with wood pulp solidification media and placed the solidified sludge into 20 cyd roll-off boxes.
- TriHydro and START visited areas marked gray on previous TriHydro maps. TriHydro agreed to do the small amount of cleanup required in these areas and produce a new map without gray markings.
- TriHydro treated storm water from manway SS-23 with the GAC system and stored the treated water in frac tanks.
The wood pulp solidification material is a reclaimed/recycled product. As of September 23, 2011, approximately 1,950,000 pounds had been used to solidify waste sludge.
