Initial monitoring activities by EPA R4 ERRB personnel indicated the presence of Mercury above acceptable levels, in the science classroom. 

2. Current Activities
  2.1 Operations Section
    2.1.1 Narrative
On March 29, 2012, a student at Heron Creek Middle School broke a sling psychrometer that released Mercury into a science classroom.  The science teacher isolated the spill and evacuated the room.  The Sarasota County School Board hired a cleanup contractor to conduct removal operations. On March 30, 2012,  assistance of PRP oversight by the EPA was requested by FDEP/Bureau of Emergency Response Personnel.
2.1.2 Response Actions to Date
The cleanup contractor started removal actions during the evening of March 29, 2012. EPA mobilized to the site on the evening of March 30, 2012 and began PRP oversight.  Removal operations were completed around 0730 on the morning of April 1, 2012. After cleanup operations were complete, clearance monitoring activities began.  The averages for the clearance monitoring activities were well below acceptable levels. In consultation with CDC/ATSDR personnel, the room was deemed clear for occupation by students returning on April 2, 2012.
2.1.3 Enforcement Activities, Identity of Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs)
The Sarasota County School Board (Heron Middle School) has been identified as the PRP.

Response and removal activities have been completed by the PRP.  Clearance monitoring was conducted by EPA personnel, as well as the contractor for the PRP. In conslutation with ATSDR, the room was cleared for occupation on April 1, 2012.
