Site Description

The Fisherville Site is located at 60 Main Street (Route 122A) in Grafton, Massachusetts.  The approximately 16.2-acre site is bounded to the north by Fisherville Pond, to the east by the Blackstone River, to the south by Route 122A, and to the west by private residences.  The South Grafton Water District (SGWD) utilizes two overburden water supply wells, approximately 1000 feet south of the Site on the west side of the Blackstone River (designated as an American Heritage River) to supply domestic water for area residences.  The surrounding area is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial properties.

Current Activities

* From January 3 to 6, 2005, EPA/START personnel monitored the decommissioning of 99 injection and monitoring wells by a Shaw/ERRS subcontracted driller.  The wells were grouted from the well bottom up to the surface using a tremie pipe.  Twenty-seven (27)  of 99 injection wells located between the former mill foundation and Main Street/Route 122A were also over-drilled to a depth of approximately 5 feet and plugged with grout.  MA DEP and the new owner, Fisherville Redevelopment Corp. (FRC) selected nineteen (19)injection points and monitoring wells previously installed by EPA/START to remain on-site for future permanganate and VOC monitoring.

* On January 20, 2005, per request by the May 2004 meeting attendees, EPA held a final site closeout meeting. In attendance were representatives from MA DEP, CMEDA, SGWD, Town of Grafton, WESTON/START, USACE, ERM (EPA In-situ Chemical Oxidation "ISCO" consultant) and FRC. EPA/Weston presented the sampling data from the June, September, and October 2004 sampling events, reviewed the pre-site closure activities including well decommissioning and dam maintenance.   ERM presented a case study of a site where ISCO using permanganate had been used to remediate bedrock groundwater contaminated with VOCs.  MA DEP presented recent groundwater data collected in the peninsula.  Coler and Colatonio, consultant for SGWD reviewed and discussed the newest groundwater modeling data. FRC reviewed the latest sampling activities under the release abatement measures (RAM) of the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) and discussed the future remediation plan.  All meeting attendees agreed that the removal objective of reducing the TCE source concentration by two orders of magnitude was achieved.
