Site Description

On 1/31/05 a Plains American truck carrying crude oil was involved in an accident on County Road 35 releasing approximately 6,300 gallons of crude oil into the adjacent ditch.  Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality notified EPA for assistance.

Current Activities

MDEQ and EPA responded to the incident.  The PRP responded with their own contractors to conduct the removal action.  A vacuum truck and booming material were utilized.  Much oil was collected with absorbent pads and towels.  Responders have excavated a cutoff trench down gradient of the pooled oil to intercept flow.

Planned Removal Actions

Removal actions will continue by the PRP with MDEQ and EPA oversight.

Key Issues

Spilled oil was pooled in the roadside ditch by damming.  Unfortunately oil collection and flow line trenches burried in shallow soil provided a conduit for oil to migrate into the woods.  This additional migration extended the clean-up area.  Additionally, constant rains carried oil to a flowing waterway - an unnamed tributary to Bogue Homa Creek.
