Site Description

Refer to previous Polreps for background info.


Current Activities

On 03/02/05 at 1130 hrs the EPA OSC was notified by EPA CID of another Hg spill at Cardozo HS.  This Spill location was determined to be on the southwest third floor stairwell of the facility.  At 1400hrs DCDOH contacted the OSC to inform and to request assistance once again.  DCDOH reported that they had detected mercury levels at 100ug/m3 inside the third floor southwest stairwell.  

EPA OSC mobilized contractor personnel to site.  Kemron and its subcontractor Clean Venture arrived at 1500hrs to meet with OSC.  DCDOH and DCFD were in the process of scanning the students using a Lumex MVA.  EPA and its Start contractor provided assistance.  After completion of the student scanning, efforts focused on the decontamination of the stairwell and assessments of all other rooms inside the school.  This activity will continue thru this reporting period.


Planned Removal Actions

Continue with decon and assessment activities.


Next Steps

Low volume sampling and laboratory analytical will follow decon and assessment activities. This will be used to clear the facility.


Key Issues

EPA OSC review of the data from the 2/23 thru 2/27 decon effort shows that the Lumex MVA sample results for the third floor stairwell (southwest corner) and adjacent hallway, all were below the 1.0ug/m3 action level. There were three separate readings taken, two on the hallway and one on the stairwell.  

In addition a low volume clearance sample (CHS-2) was stationed in the southwest stairwell on the second floor directly beneath the new spill area.  There is no physical barrier between the floors that could have interfered with the collection flow.  This sample result came back as 0.004295ug/m3, well below the 1.0ug/m3 clearance level.
