On January 31, 2005, the six treatment cells at the Site were decommissioned. First, a vacuum truck was used to remove pooled rainwater from the cell covers. The cell covers and sampling ports were then removed and disposed in a roll-off bin.
Following the uncovering of the cells, START collected soil samples in an atmept to further characterize residual toxaphene concentrations. Samples were collected at locations opposite the pre-existing sampling ports in a "mirror image" of previous sampling locations.
The excavator was used to poke holes in the bottom liner of each cell. Three holes were made per cell. This allowed the cells to begin draining and drying out.
The Site was regraded with the excavator, loader and bulldozer. One EPA OSC, one START member, 3 equipment operators and the project accountant were present. All demobilized on 2/3/2005.
|
Fencing around the Site will remain until July. This should allow enough time for the former cells to dry completely. While wet, the cells pose a safety risk (slips, trips and falls) to persons trespassing on the Site.
