The Site consists of a two-story cinder block constructed structure with an apartment on the 2nd floor (main building) and a garage on a 0.4 acre parcel of land.  The Site operated as a legally grandfathered chrome plating and stripping business in a residentially zoned area.  The closest house is 40-50 feet from the rear of the building.  The business failed and there are abandoned vats, drums and hazardous substances. The facility remains inactive, and without fire protection. The property is not fenced and is accessible to the public.

On March 7, 2005 EPA's START and ERRS contractors mobilized to Bangor, Maine. On March 8 the ERRS contractor began staging the waste from the facility for subsequent shipment and disposal. This work continued until they demobilized on March 19, 2005. Initially the smaller containers of miscellaneous shop chemicals and waste (50 lbs or less and 5 gallons or smaller) were staged for lab packing.  Once those were cleared away, vats were cleaned of their contents and drums were over-packed.  The liquid in the vats were pumped into drums and sludge was packed into open top drums and cubic yard containers. Each of the vats received a final cleaning.  Floors were cleaned of visible liquids and solids and these wastes were packaged for disposal.

The ERRS contractor has collected representative samples of vat and drum materials for analysis. The results of these analysises are for transportation and disposal planning which is on-going.

Dispose of packaged and staged waste.

The owner of the facility is coordinating the removal of the the empty vats. However, if he is not successful, EPA may dispose of the vats.

The facility remains unheated and the roof leaks significantly.
