Site Description and Location
The Azzo site is an abandoned auto repair shop located at 24052 W. McNichols Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48219 and is approximately one half of an acre in size. The site is located in an area of Detroit that is characterized by residential and commercial development. An Environmental Justice analysis for the site indicated there was a high potential for EJ concerns.

Description of Threat
The site was discovered by the Detroit Fire Marshall’s office who documented 40 containers of waste. An EPA site visit found evidence that the contents in the drums and small containers included ignitable and corrosive hazardous wastes, as defined by 40 C.F.R. § 261.21 (characteristic of ignitability) and 40 C.F.R. § 261.22 (characteristic of corrosivity), which are considered hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). These hazardous wastes were abandoned, unsecured, and a potential threat to human health and the environment.

    Narrative
EPA located the owner of the facility, who agreed to remove the wastes and secure the building. On July 10, EPA reassessed the facility; the 55 gallon drums and the majority of small containers had been removed, the entrances to the building had been secured, and the owner was in the process of having power restored and an alarm system installed. The owner stated the three remaining 5-gallon containers were to be used in the new business. As they were unused, and the building was now secured, no further action was taken.
