1.1.1 Incident Category

Time Critical

1.1.2 Site Description

The Site is an industrial property that  covers approximately one acre and includes a building that housed a former packaging and machinery manufacturing plant. The site is located in a residential area with residences located to the north, east, south and west of the site, some within 100 feet of the site. The site is situated on a dead end street which borders Interstate 24 to the southeast.  Numerous small containers of chemicals were abandoned at the site.

1.1.2.1 Location

Advance Products, Inc., facility is located at 12525 Box Road, Grand Rapids, Wood County, Ohio. The geographical coordinates of the Site building are 41°27'5.36"N latitude and 83°50'25.56"W longitude.

1.1.2.2 Description of Threat

The containers on site were a threat to trespassers and may have cause off site migration. Ignitability and corrosivity hazards were present on site in the form of uncontrolled hazardous waste. Most of the containers outside of the building were commingled with a mixture of municipal garbage and construction and demolition debris located on a truck.

1.1.3 Preliminary Removal Assessment/Removal Site Inspection Results

The Advance Products, Inc. Site assessment documented the following containers inside the building: one 30-gallon drum, one 10-gallon drum, and approximately 30 small containers. On the outside of the building one 55-gallon drum and at least 15 small
containers of waste were observed. Most of the containers outside of the building were commingled with a mixture of municipal garbage and construction and demolition debris located on a truck. Several containers at the Site were sampled and confirmed the presence of ignitable and corrosive wastes bearing the waste codes D00l (ignitability) and D002 (corrosivity). Additionally, concentrations of methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, methylene chloride, arsenic, barium, chromium, and selenium were found to be present in wastes stored at the Advance Products Site, but below regulatory levels.
