Current Activities

1. Current Situation

U.S. EPA contractors completed inventorying, sampling and haz-cat of drums.  Small containers continue to be consolidated, bulked and lab packed.  Drums, vats and tanks continue to be drained and rinsed for disposal.  Aboveground storage tanks (ASTs) and associated piping continue to be inspected and drained of all materials.  This reporting period, a total of 262 drums of waste paint related materials were sent off site for disposal at Petro-Chem Processing, Inc.

U.S. EPA and START collected and additional 10 soil samples at 3 locations from the western portion of the facility and were analyzed for Volatile Organic Compounds.

Progress to date:
Drums inventoried/staged* - 3614
Drums sampled* - 3208
Drums hazcatted* - 3208
Small container collection/lab-packed - 6258
Vats/Totes/Tanks inventoried/sampled - 29
Vats/Totes/Tanks hazcatted - 29

(* Not all drums were sampled and/or hazcatted)

2. Removal Activities to Date

During the period of April 11 to April 16, 2005, EPA, ERRS and START continued staging and consolidating drums of material for disposal.  AST's and associated piping were drained of material.  A total of 597 5-gallon buckets were bulked into 55-gallon drums.  Totes and vats were cleaned in preparation for disposal.

Soil samples were collected from the western portion of the facility and indicated elevated levels of xylene and ethyl benzene on the surface and at depth.

Planned Removal Actions

• Stage and dispose of all 55-gallon drums and small containers.
• Sample, drain, rinse and render unusable all AST's, tanks, vats, totes and process vessels.
• Rinse and dispose of all empty drums.
• Excavate contaminated soils.
• Transport all wastes off site to a CERCLA compliant facility.

Next Steps

• Coordinate additional assessment of soils with MDEQ.
