At 1313 on May 17, 2005, EPA was requested by the Washington State Department of Ecology and the East Pierce County Fire Department to characterize and provide minor containment of two 55 plastic drums that were left in a roadside ditch near Lake Tapps. The drums were found on Edwards Road south of 10th street on the northeast corner of Lake Tapps in Pierce County, Washington.
As the East Pierce County Fire Department assisted by providing traffic control, the field team found two plastic drums that appeared to be full an unknown liquid. Using field analytical techniques, the field team characterized the contents of the drums to rule out whether the liquids could be considered as hazardous.
Once the contents were ruled safe for transport, a hazardous materials contractor was contacted to pick up the drums for proper treatment, storage, and disposal.
The scene was deemed secure by 1900.
