Current Activities

During this reporting period EPA Start contractor, TetraTech Inc. initiated and completed a geophysical survey using a EM-61device.  The EM-61 is a high resolution, time-domain device for detecting buried conductive objects.  This device with an intercoil spacing of 10 feet and used in the horizontal mode has an effective depth of analysis of approximately 20 feet.  This geophysical survey was completed during the week of May 23, 2005.  A final report is forthcoming.  Preliminary data appears to suggest that surficial discarded military munitions (DMM) is widespread throughout 55 acres of the site.  The EM-31 geophysical survey performed by MDE previously was completed over a 32 acre portion of the area.  This recent survey supports the MDE survey and expands the area up thru 55 acres.  Therefore there is concern that the overall area may be greater than the 55 acres identified during this survey.

On June 03, 2005 the OSC met with US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) personnel at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland to discuss USACE project management expertise for large DMM sites and disposal options for this type of material. FOSC will work with USACE in development of costing and cleanup technologies for this pending removal action.
