During this reporting period the Responsible Party's contractor, ERM Inc., initiated weekly oil extraction activities. During this reporting period recovery events occurred on 6/15, 6/23, 6/27 and 6/29. The total liquids extracted thru 6/29 includes 14,651 gals of contaminated water and 2,698 gals of fuel oil. Weekly and now semi-weekly extraction events will continue.
During this Reporting period the FOSC received and approved the Response Action Plan and the Extent of Contamination Study.
On June 29, 2005 ERM initiated its Extent of Contamination Study. Beacon Environmental, sub to ERM, initiated a soil gas survey on the site. This study will augment previous work performed by EPA and the USACE. Beacon Environmental will utilize a passive system under the trade name EMFLUX. Approximately 50 samplers were placed downgradient of and on the Fogle's property. The samplers were placed just below the surface and will be collected in 10 to 14 days. Gas chromatograph analysis of the samplers will determine hot spots and identification of the fuel itself. In addition this passive survey will provide a visual indication of the location, movement, composition and concentration of the petroleum hydrocarbons across the site.
On June 24, 2005 Fogle's submitted a request for direct discharge of the accumulated contaminated water to the nearby creek under a general NPDES permit. In addition the proposal includes a dual treatment system by passing the water over GAC. A series of two GAC units to ensure adequate treatment of the water will be utilized. In addition, samples will collected and analyzed prior to this discharge. On June 29, 2005 the OSC met with ERM on site to discuss this proposal. The On-site treatment and direct discharge of this water will enhance the overall efficiency of these extraction/collection events.
