During this reporting period grid numbers 20, 22 32 and 33 were excavated. Backfilling and restoration activities are completed on grid number 20, 22 and 33. Restoration of grid number 32 is underway as of the date of this report. Grid #21 is covered by the concrete pad where a gazebo used to be. The Minneapolis Park Board has hired an independent contractor to remove this concrete. See Key Issues below for more details. An updated Grid Map is posted on the Documents Section for your convinience.
Since the removal action began on June 13, 2005, we have been collecting personal and perimeter air monitoring samples, as well as post excavation confirmatory soil samples. There are 2 documents in the Documents Section providing information on sampling protocols and a summary of sampling results as of the day of this report. Please refer to the Documents Section if interested in more details.
Next week, we will be loading trucks for disposal. It is expected it will take about a week to load and dispose of the contaminated soils stockpiled on site. Once the entire stockpile is disposed of, we will resume excavation activities.
Placing of the rip rap along the river bank is scheduled to begin on or around September 8, 2005. This is contingent to weather conditions and the completion of preparatory work along the River bank.
The Minneapolis Park Board secured the services of an independent contractor to conduct additional work at the Park. Specifically, the contractor was tasked to remove the picnic tables, benches, walkways, and concrete pad where a gazebo used to be. All these are consider permanent structures, and are outside EPA's scope of work. Therefore, EPA will not replace these items, nor will reimburse the Park Board for its costs. This is a separate action with which the EPA has no involvement nor oversight responsibilities. If you have any questions about this additional work, please contact the Minneapolis Park Board. This additional work is schedule to begin on or around Saturday, 6 August 2005. EPA will make sure this additional work does not interfere with our activities at the Park.
