During the week of October 3, 2006 full scale dredging operations and support activities were on-going in Ruddiman Pond, and in Ruddiman Creek. Support activities include water treatment, calciment delivery, truck loading/unloading, decontamination procedures and maintenance of roads and barriers. As of the end of day on October 7, appromixately 9,170 cubic yards were shipped off site for disposal. 6,270 cubic yards of that material were from Area A3 of Ruddiman Pond, and the remaining 2,900 cubic yards were from Area G of Ruddiman Creek. 288,900 gallons of water have been treated and discharged into the sanitary sewer as of 10/7/05.
Three obstacles were overcome during week. On Monday morning, Great Lakes Docks and Materials lost one of two spuds from their work barge when the support cable snapped. The top of the 40 foot long spud was located 11 feet under the water surface and recovered. GLDM spent two days repairing the spud, and reinforcing the winching system to prevent a reoccurance in the future. On Wednesday, EQM's filter bags in the water treatment system were clogging within half an hour of installation. They have solved this by dosing the water with chlorine prior to putting it through the treatment system. For every 20,000 gallons of water, one pound of chlorine is added. On Thursday, Jackson and Mercky encountered material that is too soft to bear the weight of the excavator in the southwest portion of Area G. They retreated from the area to prevent the equipment from getting stuck in the mud. J&M dug out the top four feet of soft material under the access road path, then backfilled it with sand. This has allowed them to return on swamp mats to the southwest corner to complete excavation of Area G.
