Site Description

The Brunswick Wood Preserving Site is currently a long term EPA remedial project awaiting funding.  The main contaminants on the site include creosote, copper, chromium, and arsenic.  On 10/06/2005 Tropical Storm Tammy hit the area causing severe flooding on and around the site.  Georgia Department of Natural Resources was notified of a possible breach on the site causing contamination to  be spread to two adjacent residential properties.

Current Activities

David Dorian was dispatched to the site to investigate whether there was a continual release from the site and to determine if the site had impacted surrounding residential soil and/or drinking water.  A sheen was reported in the residential yards but the site could not be confirmed as the source.

OSC Dorian noted that a small sheen appeared along a ditch adjacent to the railspur running along Floraville Lane.  However, possible source for the sheen included not only the contaminated on site pits, but also the railroad ballast and the boat parked at the end of the lane.  The amount of contamination was minimal.

Next Steps

EPA OSC will meet with residents to discuss their concerns as well as with the Glynn Environmental Coalition. EPA OSC will conduct a file review and coordinate with the RPM.  OSC will assess the need to sample drinking water supplies and determine the best agency to conduct the sampling.
