Current Activities

From November 9 - December 9, 2005, U.S. EPA and its Emergency Rapid Response Services (ERRS) and Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contractors continued actions to reduce releases of hydrogen sulfide from the landfill and eliminate high level exposure to nearby receptors.

Routine actions include on-site and off-site monitoring for hydrogen sulfide and particulate matter, site security, road grading, and general site maintenance.  Specific response actions are detailed below.

SITE ACTIVITIES TO DATE:

- Grading and filling of the pond area between the Phase II Summit Area and the Phase II Split cells is approximately 25 percent complete.  Contaminated pond water is simultaneously being pumped and sent through the onsite water treatment system.

- To date, approximately 1,100,000 total gallons of contaminated water has been treated on-site and discharged to the Warren POTW.  Of this total, 100,000 gallons has been drawn directly from the landfill liner.  The remaining volume has been drawn from the contaminated pond that is being filled with clay.

- Air monitoring along the sewer line for H2S is being performed as the treatment system is operational.

- Perimeter air monitoring was conducted during all site activities.  No readings exceeding the site’s action level were obtained.

Planned Removal Actions

-   Treat 40-60 million gallons of surface and sub-surface leachate.
-  Per the design plans, install a surface water / storm water management system
-  Install a permanent leachate management system.
-  If necessary, design and install a soil vapor extraction and treatment system.

Next Steps

-  Continue implementation of the surface water management system.
-  Continue leachate treatment and discharge.

Key Issues

- Site activities were suspended from November 19 through November 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

- The Warren POTW granted permission for 24-hour discharge operations from the site.

- As cooler weather and snow have persisted, noticeable odors have been observed.  Air monitoring readings continue to be below site-established action levels.
