The 10,000 gallon underground storage tank (UST) failed, realeasing an estimated 1500 gallons of #4 heating oil into the soils, boiler room, catch basin to a storm water system into the proximinal stream and wetland systems.
The Town of Westford hired ENPRO Environmental which conducted the inital emergency response activities which consisted of containing the oil, removing the tank, and conducting air monitoirng in the school. ENPRO is currently conducting extent of contamination investigations including the installation of peizometers, coring thru the basement walls, and maintaining the vac truck at the outfall to the swale..
During the first week January ENPRO is planning to collect the booms/sorbent pads from the swale, then pressure wash the rocks and collect product from the oiled areas.
Once the extent of contamiantion has been determined the Town, and under supervision of the State DEP, will excavate the contamined soils along the base of the building.
The DEP and the Town responded to the release on December 27, 2005. EPA was notified on January 5, 2006.
