Current Activities

GLDM is currently dredging in Pond Area 3.  Results of a check survey on 1/21/06 indicate that approximately 1,200 cy of sediment need to be removed from the west side of Area 3 to reach the proposed target depth of nine feet.  Dredging activities in Pond Area 4 & 5 have been completed along with backfill of required sand and gravel restoration activities.  These two areas have been isolated utilizing silt curtain to eliminate re-contamination.  Turbidity monitoring location #3 was moved to deeper water in Area 5 after removing the Ruddiman Pond temporary sheet pile dam  outfall which allowed the pond water level to lower approximately 1.5 - 2 feet.

J & M Construction completed dredging, disposal and partial restoration activities on Creek Areas E & F.   Access roads along the west side of creek Area C have been installed.  Access roads along creek Area D have not been constructed due to soft wetland sediment which will not support the weight of the proposed/designed roadway.  EQM has modified their approach to dredge Area D.  Instead of using the traditional heavy equipment and roadway construction design, an amphibious excavator and dump truck will be utilized to complete Area D dredging.  Areas C & D have been isolated with temporary sheet wall dams and bypass pumps and piping installed.  The bypass pumps are being utilized instead of the proposed bypass channels due to the soft wetland sediments inability to support equipment and roadways.  The sealed off areas are being de-watered for excavation and the water is being sent to the on-site water treatment facility.   Dredging activities are expected to resume in Areas C & D on or around 1/27/06.

To date approximately 48,100 cy of sediment have been removed from Ruddiman Pond and Creek.  As of 1/23/06 the total solidified sediment disposed of is approximately 78,704 tons and approximately 2,300,000 gallons of water have been treated and disposed.

Planned Removal Actions

GLDM will complete dredging activities in Pond Area 3 and conduct confirmatory sampling. Anticipated completion of dredging in Area 3 will be during the week of 1/23/05.  Dredging in Pond Area 2 will commence following the completion of dredging activities in Area 3.

J&M Construction will resume dredging in Creek segments C & D upon arrival of amphibious excavation equipment.  The amphibious excavator arrived on 1/24/06 and the amphibious dump truck is expected to arrive on 1/26/06.

Next Steps

Complete dredging activities in Ruddiman Pond  Area A3 followed by confirmatory sampling then move into Area A2.  Dredging in creek Areas C & D are expected to begin on or around 1/27/06.
