Site Description

On February 2, 2006, at approximately 10:00 am, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was requested by the Washington State Department of Ecology to investigate the report of two abandoned drydocks in Lake Washington.  Initial reports indicated that one of the dry docks had sunk, while the other was reported to contain unknown quantities of hazardous materials.  The drydocks were located near Renton, Washington off shore from the Quendall Terminal Superfund Site.  Due to the adverse weather experienced in the area (high wind and heavy rain) for the past few weeks, the reporting party feared that the other dry dock might sink, releaseing the hazardous materials into the water.  The dry dock was only accessible by boat.  Hazardous materials found on deck of the dry dock included:  a small quantity of gasoline fuel, a few small oil cans, one gallon bottle of disinfectant cleaner, and a small amount of other chemicals.

Current Activities

No further action is pending for this response and assessment.

Planned Removal Actions

The small quantities of hazardous materials were removed and disposed of by the Department of Ecology.

Next Steps

The Department of Ecology will notify appropriate personnel to identify an owner or possible removal of the drydocks.
