A transportation truck roll over resulted in the release of approximately 11000 gallons of fuel (9000 gal of gasoline and 2000 gal of Diesel on March 11, 2006 at approximately 0530. The incident occurred on US Hwy 5, at milepost 118. The fuel released to the ground and entered an unnamed tributary to Roberts Creek and the South Fork of the Umpqua River.

The Environmental Protection Agency continues to support the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
Approximately 3610 cubic yards total of petroleum contaminated soil has been removed as of March 17, 2006.
Excavation on the west shoulder continues on the north end of the west excavation. Crews will continue to grid and sample the south end of the excavation. These samples are being submitted to the fixed and mobile laboratory. Water samples from the tributary and Roberts Creek will continue to be collected on a daily basis. Additional sampling locations were added on Roberts Creek upstream and downstream.
The drainage pipe that entered in on the south end of the project will be excavated this weekend. Saw cutting will continue today in preparation of excavating this drainage pipe today.
The north portion of the west excavation still has a large amount of petroleum contaminated soil that is going to the stockpile. This stockpile area continues to be managed on a 24-hour basis. Soil stockpile will be screened and rock larger than 4-inches will be reused for fill in the excavation.
Excavation may then return to removing the two closed lanes for contamination below the road asphalt surface. This is uncertain at this point. Depth of contamination in this area is shallow, and geo-probe work was completed on Thursday. Soil samples from the geo-probe were analyzed by the mobile laboratory. The plan for this section is to remove damaged asphalt and conduct test pitting to assess the shallow soil.
One significant seep west of the toe of the road was discovered Wednesday in the area of the tributary to Roberts Creek. A recovery trench is being planned here, and liquid was pumped to the Frac tanks on site. The seep was immediately controlled with removal of soil overburden at the toe and creating a catch basin for any additional seepage. Backfill of road and reconstruction of the paved surface will not be completed by CH2MHill as planned, but the current responsible party plans to hire road construction company. This will only impact the currently closed south directions lanes and does not involve the current two south direction temporary lanes. Traffic flow can currently continue in only one of the temporary south directions lanes and both lanes may not be available until possibly Tuesday at the earliest.
Preliminary fixed and mobile laboratory results for the excavation have shown that the majority of the impacted soil has been removed, and has shown limited impacts to Roberts Creek and surface water. Geo-probe borings east of the main excavation has shown limited impacts to the road-fill beneath both south-bound lanes.
