Site Description

Work Mission Statement:

Safely and efficiently investigate and remove Munitions and Explosives of Concern (MEC); Materials Potentially Possessing an Explosive Hazard (MPPEH), Munitions Debris (MD) and explosively contaminated soil(TNT) from the Elkton Farms Firehole Site, as defined in EPA's geophysical study.

Current Activities

During this reporting period the intrusive activities continued within grids .  IPC continued magging and digging in grids A4, H5, F6, K5 and K6.    These activities included magging and flagging of all metal items and the hand shovelling of these flagged materials. Grid A4, immediately adjacent to the tree line,  revealed the presence of a potential pit or other cluster of MPPH/MD.  This was identified as such in the original geophysical study performed by EPA.  A meeting onsite between EPA, MDE, USACE and IPC on 3/19 determined that the grid would be abandoned and that the Rangemaster would be utilized to clear it.  In addition the area would be expanded into the tree line in order to "chase" the material.  IPC will clear a swath of brush and small vegetative matter in prep for Rangemaster.

IPC reinstalled warning signs along Zeitler Rd. that were previously destroyed by trespassers.

Key Issues

USACE to produce Right of Entries (Access Agreements) for Rangemaster mobilization to site.  It appears that three private property owners will have to provide approval for this large equipment to traverse their property.  Schedule for this mobilization is expected to be mid April.
