During the current reporting period, excavation of asbestos impacted soils started in portions of grid numbers 14, 25, 36, 47, 58, 17, 16, 27, 28, 41, 42, and 43. Backfilled work began at some of these areas.  

From 14 to 18 August 2006, 83 truckloads of contaminated soils were transported to the Veolia Environmental Services facility, formelly known as Onyx FCR Landfill in Buffalo, MN.

The numbers provided on the previous PolRep regarding number of air and soil samples collected, were erroneous.  Please disregard.

As of 19 August 2006, a total of 386 air samples were collected and analyzed for asbestos using transmission electron microscopy (TEM).  Air sampling results are compared to the project-specific air quality objective (AQO) of 0.001 S/cc.  43 air samples were reported above the AQO with a maximum of 0.008 S/cc.  26 of the above-mentioned air samples, collected between 13 June 2005 and 16 June 2005, were analyzed with an increased analytical sensitivity and reporting quantities were above the AQO.  Since that period, the analytical sensitivity has been decreased.  Since then 17 air samples were reported above the AQO with a maximum of 0.003 S/cc.  1 air sample was damaged during site operations.  Asbestos concentrations in all remaining 342 air samples reported by the laboratory at concentrations equal to or below the AQO.

Through 19 August 2006, 173 soil samples have been analyzed for asbestos using either phase light microscopy (PLM) or TEM, and compared to the project-specific action level (AL) of 1%.  Of these soil samples, 7 were reported above the AL with a maximum range of 15-20%, 19 detected asbestos below the AL, and the remaining 134 soil samples were reported by the laboratory as non-detect.  Analytical results for 13 soil samples are pending.

Continue the excavation of asbestos impacted soils, off site disposal of excavated soils, and backfill and restoration of excavated areas.  It is expected this will continue through the late  Summer and early Fall months.

Continue with the planned removal actions.  Start working with the Minneapolis Park Board to secure the services of a landscaping company to replace vegetation removed and or damaged during the removal action.  Upon completion of the removal and the restoration work, re-open the Park to the public.
