Removal activities began at the blue ledge Mine Site on August 28, 2006. A summarry of on-site activities between August 28, and September 1, 2006, can be found in Pollution Report #1. A summarry of on-site activities between September 2, 2006, and September 15, 2006, is presented below.
September 2, 2006 Personnel: 8 ERRS, 1 START Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, High 80’s
On Saturday September 2, 2006, ERRS continued clearing material out of the channel below the log tailings dam. Waste rock material in the channel was excavated and then relocated using the loader up to the middle of the waste rock pile (above log tailings dam). Additionally, ERRS began reinforcing the log tailings dam by stacking large rocks below and against the log tailings dam. An additional excavator was delivered to the site today.
September 4, 2006 Personnel: 8 ERRS, 1 START, 1 OSC Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, High 80’s
On Monday September 4, 2006, ERRS continued removing waste rock material from the channel below the log dam. Once the material was relocated to the waste rock pile, ERRS moved the material up the slope using the excavators. ERRS also completed the retaining wall along the west side of the upper terrace top of the waste rock pile. The wall is 4 feet high and 70 feet long. Space behind the wall was backfilled. This wall should intercept small amounts of tailings/waste rock material sloughing off of the face of the waste rock pile
September 5, 2006 Personnel: 8 ERRS, 1 START, 1 OSC Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, High 80’s to mid 90’s
On Tuesday September 5, 2006, ERRS continued moving material up the lower slope of the waste rock pile. An area was cleared on the Forest Service road near the office trailer to stage limestone rock when it is delivered and a fuel tank was delivered to the site. Additionally, Pete Jones with the US Forest Service visited the site to inspect the progress of the job.
September 6, 2006 Personnel: 8 ERRS, 2 START, 1 OSC Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, high 80’s to low 90’s.
On Wednesday September 6, 2006, ERRS continued moving material up the lower slope of the waste rock pile. Approximately, 20 cubic yards (23 tons) of ¾” Limestone rock gravel was delivered to the site. Three residents of Joe Bar came to the site command post inquiring about the work. OSC Harry Allen addressed their questions.
September 7, 2006 Personnel: 8 ERRS, 1 START, 1 OSC Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, high 80’s
On Thursday September 7, 2006, ERRS continued pushing and grading material up the lower slope of the waste rock pile. ERRS also started excavating the sedimentation above the log tailings dam. Pete Jones with the US Forest Service visited the site to see the progress of the job.
September 8, 2006 Personnel: 8 ERRS, 1 START, 1 OSC Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, high 70’s to low 80’s.
On Friday September 8, 2006, ERRS continued work on the sedimentation basin as well as grading the lower slope of the waste rock pile. Additionally, a sloped trench was constructed above the sedimentation basin. The trench will facilitate the capture of sediment laden run-off by the sedimentation basin.
September 9, 2006 Personnel: 6 ERRS, 1 START Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, high 70’s to low 80’s
On Saturday September 9, 2006, ERRS finished constructing the sedimentation basin The basin is approximately 15’ x 30’. The bottom of the basin was layered with a mixture of ¾ inch limestone gravel and soil. ERRS also moved more boulders and wood debris to the channel sides. Additionally, two Southern Oregon University students arrived on site to collect samples from mine and stream water. The students are working with the USFS to document the effect that removal activities will have on the surrounding environment.
September 11, 2006 Personnel: 1 ERT, 1 START, 8 ERRS Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, high 70’s to low 80’s.
On Monday September 11, 2006, Terrance Johnson of ERT arrived on site, ERRS gave site tour and overview. ERT would like to see step ponds installed above sedimentation basin. ERRS placed and compacted boulders in the channel above the basin and compacted them using the excavator. Limestone cobbles (12”) are scheduled to be delivered Tuesday September 12, 2006.
September 12, 2006 Personnel: 1 ERT, 1 START, 8 ERRS Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, high 70’s to mid 80’s.
On Tuesday September 12, 2006, ERRS continued to place and compact boulders in the stream/drainage channel above the sedimentation basin. Approximately 100 tons of limestone was delivered to the site. Trucks dumped the limestone in an accessible area prior to the USFS 1050 road entrance to the site (near the community of Joe Bar) ERRS transported the stone up the hill, along USFS 1050 to the site in a dump truck. ERRS placed the limestone cobbles into the sedimentation basin and compacted them.
September 13, 2006 Personnel: 1 ERT, 1 START, 8 ERRS Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, mid 80’s.
On Wednesday September 13, 2006, ERRS continued placing limestone cobbles into the sedimentation basin. ERRS has also begun constructing step pools above and below the sedimentation basin. An additional 100 tons of limestone boulders were delivered. ERRS continued transporting material from the community of Joe Bar, up to the site..
September 14, 2006 Personnel: 1 ERT, 1 START, 8 ERRS Weather: Clear skies, Sunny, mid 70’s.
On Thursday September 14, 2006, ERRS began placing limestone into step pools. The final 100 tons of limestone cobbles were delivered. USFS representative Pete Jones came to site to check progress. ERT representative Terrence Johnson discussed step pool locations and build specs with ERRS and Pete Jones.
September 15, 2006 Personnel: 1 ERT, 1 START, 8 ERRS Weather: Cloudy, scattered showers, mid 50’s to 60.
On Friday September 15, 2006, ERRS completed constructing the last of four step pools below the log tailings dam. An additional three step pools have been constructed above the sedimentation basin. Limestone cobbles continued to be transported from the Joe Bar community to the site staging area. ERRS continued to place limestone into the upper and lower stream/drainage channels, as well as into the step pools.
