Current Activities

An application for obtaining a Federal EPA Identification number was completed and submitted to allow the offsite disposal of Federally regulated wastes from the site.  This application is being processed and a number should be attained this week.

Site activities continued at the subject site with the collection and packaging of hazardous waste materials.  The packaged materials are staged in sea containers onsite pending disposal.

Site activities also continued with regards to the removal of process solids from around the smelter area.  Process solids removal was completed on September 18, 2006.  Equipment used to complete process solids removal was decontaminated and moved offsite.

Sampling and analysis of accumulated rainwater and water from tanks was completed and Patriot is awaiting profile acceptance for the respective waste streams.

On September 20, 2006, Patriot completed the rinsing of tanks containing petroleum hydrocarbons.  Rinseate from the rinsing operations was transported under Hazardous Waste Manifest to Demenno Kerdoon for disposal.
On September 27, 2006 Patriot mobilized a crew and vacuum truck to pump non-hazardous water accumulated at the site.  The non-hazardous water was pumped from containment areas and hoppers. During the process of pumping from beneath the ovens inside building #2, water containing waste oil was encountered.  Patriot pumped free liquids from this area and manifested the entire load as a Non-RCRA Hazardous Waste Liquid due to the hydrocarbons encountered.

The perimeter of the WMU was fenced with six feet tall chainlink fence.  The inside of the fence was lined with sediment fence and straw boom to limit off-site migration of solids due to run-off.

Planned Removal Actions

All containerized hazardous substances will be removed from the site including all small containers, lab packs, drums and cylinders.  All tanks will be pumped and cleaned.  All process solids will be either secured inside one of the smelter buildings or in its existing conex.

Next Steps

1.  Disposal of all hazardous substances and hazardous waste to a CERCLA off-site approved TSDF.
